Girls in Gis are holding its first donation drive to help those in need. Thanks to the support of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community in Texas, the Girls in Gis Wish List Donation Drive will directly benefit the SafePlace shelter in Austin, Texas.
SafePlace Austin –– a resource for sexual assault and domestic violence survivors –– supports the needs of survivors through a 24-hour hotline, hospital accompaniment, shelter and counseling services. Programs are also available that educate, build awareness and teach clients about assessing resources. The organization also helps children of survivors.
The SafePlace shelter needs some of the most basic items that can make a big difference in helping women and families rebuild their lives. To help, the Girls in Gis Wish List Donation Drive will collect needed items and create awareness of the services and resources that SafePlace offers.
[social][/social]The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community in Texas has been overwhelmingly supportive of this Girls in Gis Donation Drive, which runs through Jan. 20. Over twenty-two academies have made their facilities available as collection sites for their students and the public. This donation drive is an amazing opportunity to unite, give back to the community and educate the public about SafePlace services.
There will also be a Girls in Gis-Austin self defense event on Jan. 22. The free event will be held at the Gracie Barra North Austin Academy and led by black belt instructor Fabiana Borges. This free event is open to women and girls of all ages and skill levels from any academy affiliation.
As a part of the drive, Girls in Gis will be holding a spirited competition between their members to see who can bring in the most wish list items for SafePlace. Girls in Gis Swag Baskets will be awarded to all the Girls in Gis members from the winning academy. Prizes will be presented at the Girls in Gis-Austin event.
A full list of wish list items and drop off locations can be found at girls-in-gis.com. Additional donations and information on SafePlace services can be found at Safeplace.org.
