What will be the focus of the seminar with Jean Jaques?
This will be his first time here with us. We will likely spend
the first day working all gi techniques and the second day focusing on no-gi techniques. I asked him to come and and teach whatever he would like. When you have someone of the calibre of Professor Machado coming to instruct, you can rest assured that any teaching will be of the highest quality.
The seminar will be 2 days, but we will also have an open mat on Friday night for those interested in coming and getting some sparring time in with myself and some of the other seminar attendees.

What is your relationship with JJM / Lineage?
I have my rank from Eddie Bravo, who is of course, a 2nd Degree black belt under Jean Jacques. He’s a legend and arguably the greatest Jiu-Jitsu fighter of all time. He is the man who instructed my instructor. It is truly an honor to have him coming to our academy.
Our academy has been in Decatur, AL for nearly 40 years teaching traditional martial arts. We have been incorporating grappling and Jiu Jitsu into our program for a long time, but never with any formal instruction or lineage until around 2 years ago. Jiu Jitsu is still very new to the southeast, especially Alabama.
We have less than 10 Black Belts in the entire state, though the Black Belts we do have are very good. We have guys like Johnny Lee Smith and Samuel Puccio in this state. People may not know those names in the same way that they know Marcelo Garcia or Cobrinha or Roger Gracie, but those guys are excellent practitioners and excellent teachers.
My goal is to build a Jiu Jitsu community among the state’s practitioners so that we can all work together to further our understanding of the art. We don’t have a school on every corner like L.A. does, so we have to stick together to make a name for Jiu-Jitsu in Alabama. I want to be known as the academy that brings in the best instructors and is open minded. I want all of the local practitioners to know that they can drop in here and feel at home. I have something to learn from everyone.
Get plenty of rest, plenty of water. Bring a banana to snack on. Don’t forget your notebook!
Anything else you want everyone to know about the seminar?
Space is limited, so please hurry and register.
